History of AAA Conventions

In 1948 a group of amateur anglers from New South Wales and Victoria met in Newcastle and discussed the benefits of an Australian wide association of anglers. As a result of those discussions, a formal meeting was held in 1949 by representatives from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, at which time is was decided to establish the Australian Anglers Association (AAA).

On the same weekend the attending State representatives managed to hold the 1st fishing competition of a few hours in duration. Subsequently to this, South Australia formed a State body and affiliated with the National body in 1957. Western Australian club anglers voted in 1969 to change the name of their State body to the Western Australian Division of the Australian Anglers Association becoming affiliated in 1971 as the fifth member State. New Zealand was invited to participate at the 1983 Ballina Championship and were offered associate membership in 1986. The Australian Capital Territory was an affiliated member from 1990 to 2003.
